What is a PESEL number and how to get it?

After arriving in Poland, the first thing you should do is obtain a PESEL number. This is very important if you plan to live and work here.

Three important facts about the PESEL number:

• it is issued free of charge,
• it is arranged locally,
• the number is assigned permanently – there’s no need to renew it.

To get it, you need to go to the City Hall (Urząd Miasta). In Poznań, it is located at plac Kolegiacki 17, 61-841 Poznań.

You must appear at the citizen service department with your passport. On-site, fill in an application (wniosek), and you will receive your PESEL number within a few minutes.

To obtain a PESEL number, you need to have a residence registration (zameldowanie), which you can also arrange at the same place.

The PESEL number is most often required in the following situations:

• when opening a bank account,
• when visiting a doctor,
• when changing marital status,
• before starting a new job,
• when applying for a bank loan,
• for personal income tax declaration,
• when purchasing insurance.
